Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine vocabulary teaching methods used in historical textbooks prepared with the purpose of teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language. These historical textbooks of Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language are Divanü Lügati't Türk, Muhakemetü'l-Lügateyn, Kitabü'l-İdrak Li Lisânü'l-Etrak, El-Kavaninü'l-Külliyye Li Zabti'l-Lügati'- Türkiyye, Et-Tuhfetü'z-Zekiyye Fi'l-lugâti't-Türkiyye, Kitabü Bulgati'l-Müştak Fi Lugâti't-Türk ve'l-Kıfçak, Hilyetü'l-İnsân ve Heybetü'l-Lisân, Makbûl -i Ârif (Potur Şâhidî), Sübha-i Sıbyân, Tuhfe-i Hüsâm, Tuhfe-i Vehbî, Codex Cumanicus, Miftâh-ı Lisân, Ecnebilere Mahsus Elifbâ, etc. Data related to vocabulary teaching were collected by means of literature review (document review) on the aforementioned and found historical textbooks within the scope of qualitative research and analysis were conducted on them accordingly. Based on the findings of the study, it was understood that the words in these historical Turkish textbooks were the ones mostly used in everyday and business lives. One of the important conclusions needed to be emphasized here is the presence of vocabulary teaching methods to children through dictionaries at a time when oral tradition was widespread. Another important conclusion is that words of similar types in terms of subject matter and structure were often taught in a context.
