THE PESENT SİTUATİON OF QUILT ART IN THE CITY OF DENİZLİ

Abstract

Quilt is an important material culture element today as it was in the past. The art of quilting is continued by masters in the center of Denizli, in the Kaleiçi bazaar and in workshops between the neighborhoods. In Denizli, single, double, double and baby quilts are sewn for special occasions and daily use from past to present. These are cotton, wool or fiber filled. In time, there has been a decrease in traditional quilt sewing with the production of ready-made quilts as well as hand-sewn quilts and the development of warming technology. In addition, in this profession, which depends on the master-apprentice relationship, less apprentices are trained and the number of quilt masters in the tradesmen groups is decreasing. In this study, the tools and equipment used in the production of traditional quilts in Denizli province, the production stages of the quilts, color, motif, composition and pattern features were examined and the current state of the quilt art was discussed. The literature on the subject was searched, data were collected and photographs were taken with the quilt masters in Denizli province by mutual interview method.It is aimed to bring and document the traditional quilts of Denizli province to the literature.
