Abstract


CAN AIKIDO BE A COMMUNICATION TOOL TO PREVENT VIOLENCE?

ABSTRACT Aikido is Japanese self-defense art and philosophy. However, while teaching self-defense, Aikido also manages to develop self-knowledge, self-improvement and self-control skills beyond the physical fitness and skill that other western martial arts try to bring. The related literature has revealed that Aikido has beneficial effects on mind and body. This study, which is a compilation of researches that contribute to nonviolent communication in the literature on Aikido, is thought to provide a different perspective on the issue of preventing violence. Objective: The aim of this review is to analyze the results obtained in line with the literature and to discuss the issue that Aikido techniques can be a communication tool in preventing violence. Method: For the purpose of the study, the relationship between Aikido techniques and nonviolent communication is discussed and the relationship is revealed. For this purpose, databases such as SPORTDiscuss, PsycINFO, PubMed, MEDLINE and ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, have been scanned by considering the inclusion criteria and keywords. This study is to expected to create awareness on the subject and inspire new studies.
